What’s the Difference Between Drawing Ink and Fountain Pen Ink?

Octopus Fluids Write & Draw Inks offer a unique blend of drawing ink and fountain pen ink, combining the best features of both. While drawing ink and fountain pen ink are both used for various creative techniques, they have distinct differences. Here's a breakdown of what sets them apart:

    What is Drawing Ink?

Drawing ink is not just ink; it includes a binder along with the coloring pigment. This binder, such as shellac or acrylic resins, adds substance to the ink and gives it a subtle sheen once dried. Shellac, a resin derived from the secretions of aphids, is one of the most well-known binders in drawing inks.

    What is Fountain Pen Ink?

Fountain pen ink, on the other hand, is typically dye-based, making it perfect for everyday writing. These inks flow smoothly from the pen nib and are easy to clean from the pen, hands, and workplace. However, they are not water-resistant and can be sensitive to light exposure. Despite these limitations, fountain pen inks are available in a vast range of colors, including sheen, duo-shading, glitter, pastel, and neon varieties. There are also pigmented fountain pen inks, which are more limited in color options but require more careful pen maintenance due to the potential for clogging.

When Should You Use Drawing Ink vs. Fountain Pen Ink?

Both drawing ink and fountain pen ink can be used with calligraphy pens, dip pens, or brushes. However, only fountain pen ink should be used in a fountain pen, as the binder in drawing ink can cause blockages. Fountain pen ink flows easily and absorbs into paper, which can lead to "feathering" on certain types of paper. Drawing ink, thanks to its binder, stays in place even with heavy color application, which is especially useful in calligraphy for creating bold downstrokes.

What Makes Octopus Write & Draw Inks Special?

Octopus Write & Draw Inks feature a fountain pen-friendly binder that maintains the ink’s smooth flow while ensuring it stays well on the paper. This makes it ideal for calligraphic lettering and also versatile enough for painting with a brush. The ink is waterproof, lightfast, and permanent, making it suitable for a wide range of artistic applications. With 38 vibrant colors, these inks are truly exceptional.

Can You Use Octopus Write & Draw Inks in a Fountain Pen?

Yes, you can use Write & Draw Inks in your fountain pen, but it’s important to clean the pen thoroughly after use to prevent the ink from drying and clogging the pen. For this reason, it's advisable to avoid using these inks in particularly expensive fountain pens.
