Why invest in well-made pastel paper?

Pastels are at their best when you can apply layer after layer of those rich pigments and make the most of their vibrant colours! Too smooth or thin a paper, and each stroke starts lifting off the last layer of pigment. For oil pastels, the best quality paper has a rugged texture similar to watercolour paper; for soft pastels, it has a layer of extra fine silica sand which is smooth to the touch but super absorbent! In both cases, the paper's "tooth" holds onto those base layers of pigment as you add even more colour.

The best quality papers are made of 100% cotton, which is both tougher than wood fiber and naturally acid-free. This lets your paintings last for years with no sign of warping or yellowing.
